Deep within the natural rock cave rests the holy Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam of Gautameshwar Mahadev. Enshrined beneath a masterfully hand-carved white Makrana marble pavilion (mandap) with white guardian elephants, silver umbrella (chhatra), and unbroken jal-dhara. Illuminated by spiritual violet lighting, the stone walls preserve an eternal sanctified cool atmosphere where thousands come to perform Rudrabhishek and seek inner tranquility.

The pristine white temple complex gracefully ascends the rugged hillside, crowned with a fluttering saffron flag visible from across the valley. Below the shrine lies the open courtyard welcoming pilgrims, surrounded by dense groves of neem, banyan, and mango trees. The multi-tiered terraces provide a vantage overlooking the lush flora and the historic city of Sihor.
The approach to Gautameshwar begins through stone-paved steps shaded by centuries-old trees. The historic stone wall proudly bears the sacred chant "ૐ સ્વયંભૂ શ્રી ગૌતમેશ્વર મહાદેવ ૐ". The traditional gateway, decorated with marigold garlands, marks the threshold into deep spiritual silence.
Running beside the sanctuary is the sacred Gautami River flowing through towering volcanic rock formations and serene pools. In the distance stands a timeless stone arch bridge built during princely times to link the pilgrim paths. It was in these waters that King Siddharaj Jaisinh took the healing bath that cured him of his skin affliction.
The dramatic volcanic cliffs towering above the complex mark the ancient hermitage where Sage Gautam engaged in intense penance. Saffron flags fluttering against the blue sky guide pilgrims toward the secluded mountain caves where India's 1857 freedom champion Nana Saheb Peshwa lived in monk's garb for 46 years.
According to the sacred Skanda Purana (Dharmaranya Khanda), in the Treta Yuga, the revered Sage Gautam chose these picturesque, cave-laden hills of Sihor (then known as Saraswatpur and later Shivpur) for performing supreme austerity. Deeply pleased by his unyielding penance, Lord Shiva manifested here as a self-born Lingam — Swayambhu Gautameshwar Mahadev.
Devotees believe that a holy dip in the Gautam Kund washes away sins and blesses the seeker with sound health, longevity, and spiritual enlightenment.
During the 10th–11th century Solanki golden era of Gujarat, Emperor Siddharaj Jaisinh was afflicted by a stubborn skin disease (leprosy/white spots). Royal vaidyas and physicians across India were unable to cure him. Guided by celestial portents, the King came to the secluded hills of Sihor.
He took a devout bath in the holy waters of the Gautami Kund and worshipped Gautameshwar Mahadev with heartfelt humility. To everyone’s astonishment, his affliction vanished completely, restoring his skin to radiant purity. Filled with unbounded gratitude, King Siddharaj Jaisinh rebuilt and consecrated the holy shrine, constructed the famous stepwell Brahma Kund nearby, and famously invited 1,000 learned Vedic Audichya Brahmins from North India, endowing them with the holy city of Sihor and 100 surrounding villages.
One of India’s most valiant leaders of the 1857 First War of Independence, Nana Saheb Peshwa, gave the British Empire sleepless nights. When the revolution faced setbacks, the British declared a massive bounty, but Nana Saheb successfully eluded them by retreating into the inaccessible caves behind Gautameshwar Temple in Sihor.
Adopted into spiritual sannyasa as Yogindra Dayanand Maharaj, he resided in peaceful anonymity in these sacred caves for over 46 years, practicing rigorous yogic meditation until his samadhi in 1906. Historic artifacts, footwear, and meditation spots associated with Nana Saheb are preserved nearby in homage to this patriot-saint.
